What I Hear
New York City is known for its loud busy street and overcrowded sidewalks. New Yorkers often don’t take the time to listen to what is around us because we are too busy texting, listening to music, or racing off to our next destination. I decided to walk around one of the busiest areas of New York, Times Square, and listen to the noises around me. At 5 p.m. on a Friday afternoon, I finally took the time to listen to something other than my iPod, New York. I immediately noticed how busy this neighborhood sounds. I heard a bunch of people rushing by me talking in different languages and accents and it made me how people from all around the world travel great lengths just to visit this wonderful city. In the background, I heard the sound that I’ve grown numb to, the sound of cars honking about every few seconds. I even heard the sound of numerous street performers asking people to gather around for showtime while they blasted their music to get the crowd pumped. I was also able to hear the sound of busy New Yorkers pushing pass all the tourist without a care because most New Yorkers don’t have time to stroll through the streets. There are so many sounds around us daily, but most people never take the time to listen. Hearing all of these sounds help me understand the city I’ve been living in much more. All these sounds make Times Square and New York City what it is.
